Can I send the verification link by email instead of SMS? (Yes, here's how)

How to copy a client's verification link so you can send it by email instead of SMS. This guide is for APLYiD Core (the portal at app.aplyid.com or app.aplyid.co.uk).

Quick answer:

Create the verification as normal in Biometric > Verify. Then go to Biometric > Created, click Actions > Copy link next to the client, and paste the link into an email from your own email account. Your client must open the link on their smartphone.

When should I send the link by email?

  • Your client is overseas, or has an overseas mobile number. SMS to overseas numbers can be unreliable.

  • Your client is in a country that blocks system-generated SMS, such as China or Russia.

  • The SMS status stays at Queued, or your client says they didn't get it.

  • Your client would simply prefer email.

There's no separate "send by email" option in APLYiD. You create the verification the usual way, then copy its link and email it from your end.

How to send the link by email

  1. Log in to APLYiD.

  2. Go to Biometric > Verify. This opens the Send SMS form.

  3. Enter your client's First name, Last name and a Reference.

  4. Enter the Code and Mobile number. You still need a mobile number, even though you're sending the link by email. You can use your client's mobile number or an office mobile number. The number you use appears on the verification report.

  5. Click Send. You'll see the message "We have created a verification link and it's on its way via SMS".

  6. Go to Biometric > Created. Your client's verification is listed with the status Queued.

  7. Click Actions next to your client.

  8. Click Copy link. You'll see the message "Verification link copied to clipboard".

  9. Open your own email account, write an email to your client and paste the link into it.

The email comes from you, not from APLYiD. APLYiD Support can't email the link to your client for you.

What to tell your client

  • Open the link on a smartphone. The check needs the phone's camera to photograph their ID and record a short selfie video.

  • If they open it on a computer, they'll see a QR code. They can scan it with their phone's camera to continue on their phone.

  • If they see a QR code on their phone, their browser is in desktop mode. They should turn off "Desktop site" in Chrome, or tap "Request Mobile Website" in Safari. See Why is my client seeing a QR code instead of the verification?

  • Use Chrome or Safari.

Here's a message you can copy into your email:

Hi, please complete your identity verification using the link below. Open it on your smartphone in Chrome or Safari. You'll need your photo ID, and you'll be asked to take a photo of it and record a short selfie video. If you open the link on a computer, scan the QR code with your phone to continue.

Things to know about the link

  • The link expires after 7 days.

  • Once the check is completed, the link stops working. If you or your client open it again after it's completed, it won't load.

  • Copying the link doesn't cost anything. You're only charged when a check is completed.

Frequently Asked Questions

My client doesn't have a mobile number. Can they still complete the check?

They still need a smartphone to complete the check. Create the verification using an office mobile number, then copy the link and email it to them. If they don't have access to a smartphone at all, you'll need to verify them another way, for example with a manual verification.

Can I send the link to any email address?

Yes. You're sending it from your own email, so you can send it to any address your client uses.

The status shows "Queued". What does that mean?

It means we haven't received a response from your client's mobile carrier yet. This can happen when:

  • your client is in a country that blocks system-generated SMS, such as China or Russia

  • the mobile number is wrong or no longer in service

If the status stays at Queued, check the mobile number is correct. If it is, copy the link and send it by email instead, by following the steps above.

My client says the link has expired or won't open.

Check whether the verification has already been completed under Biometric > Completed. If it hasn't, ask your client to open the link in Chrome or Safari on their phone. If it still won't open, resend the link. See How do I resend a verification link to my client?
